Safer 6th Street Update

On behalf of Council Member Tovo -
Colleagues,
As the issue of gun violence on 6th Street emerged during our conversation with the Office of Violence Prevention today, I want to take the opportunity to reshare my Safer 6th resolutions, along with accompanying back-up regarding actions I have sponsored to address violence on 6th Street. As I noted, the first resolution directed the City Manager to develop a “nightlife management plan” informed by best practices around the nation. It also established an interdepartmental team that includes the Office of Violence Prevention.
Among other strategies, Resolution #2 directs city legal to brief us on options for taking legal action against establishments with records of violence taking place within or immediately adjacent to their establishments; I have also asked city legal to schedule an executive session for us to discuss options for limiting guns within the Sixth Street enclosure. I am hopeful that we can address both topics at our next executive session and will request that of the City Manager.
Resolution No. 20210729-175 Approve a resolution relating to comprehensive strategies and immediate and longer-term actions to create a safer Sixth Street environment for all: http://assets.austintexas.gov/austincou ... 125815.pdf
