Digital Inclusion and Low Cost Internet

Dear Colleagues,

At the most recent council meeting I was honored to present a proclamation celebrating Austin’s first annual Digital Inclusion Week (DIW), which aims to raise awareness of solutions addressing home internet access, personal devices, and local technology training and support programs.

Over the past few months I have been working to identify ways to expand internet access across Austin. In today’s age, everything has moved online. You need an internet connection to apply to jobs, do school work, and access government services. I see internet access as a matter of both infrastructure and equity and I look forward to working with my colleagues on solutions to expand digital inclusion across the City.

Earlier this summer, my office worked with the City’s Digital Inclusion team to create a one-pager outlining the no-cost/low-cost internet options currently offered by Austin providers. Having all of this information in one place and easily accessible makes it easier for people to get online. The flyer was included as part of AISD’s backpack distribution program, and has been shared at events and with community partners engaged in digital inclusion and workforce development efforts. I am posting here today to encourage you to share these options with your constituents. The one-pager is available here: http://assets.austintexas.gov/austincou ... 104227.pdf.
