Working on an Equity & Women’s Rights agenda

Colleagues, in light of recent events in Texas and around the country, I am working on an Equity & Women’s Rights agenda to bring forward sometime in the fall for action. I wanted to give you an idea early on in this process to invite you to join me in crafting the agenda.

For example, under the leadership of Mayor pro tem Garza, we have made good progress on child care. Are there additional steps to extend and strengthen those policies that we could take? Similarly, with the work that Council Member Tovo has led on with AISD, are there more initiatives that we could consider to boost our family-friendly and women-centered policies?

One area in particular I am interested in pursuing is a requirement that businesses demonstrate a policy and practice of equal pay for female employees as a criterion for eligibility as part of the City’s purchasing contract process. This requirement could also apply to any incentives the city offers to businesses. I am sure there are other meaningful steps we could take, as well.

If you’re interested in working with me on this over the summer as I’m putting these ideas together, then I’d love to have that collaboration. Please stop by my office to let me or my staff know that you’d like to help build the agenda and move the initiatives forward.

Best regards,

Leslie
