Colleagues,
As we begin to reallocate police dollars next week, it is important that our budget decisions meet the demands of the moment we're in.
As we decide which programs to reallocate dollars to, we should ask ourselves the following:
• Will this reduce harm or violence in our community— thereby making us more safe?
• Will this address equity— racial, economic, gender, etc? Will this make us more just?
• Will this reduce 911 calls and/or reduce reliance on overpolicing?
All of the priorities on the message board are good investments. However, with limited dollars, we should prioritize re-investment *first* to the programs where the answer is "Yes" to all three questions above, and where the programs most advance the goals of safety and justice.
I welcome your thoughts on this framework, and I appreciate all our work together.
