Mayor Adler Budget Amendments

Post by Steve Adler »

Colleagues:
I am posting two budget amendments for your consideration.
1. Amend the budget by $150,000 to establish a Housing Strike Fund. The purpose of a strike fund is to target the preservation and creation of affordable housing in Austin. See response to budget question No.165 for more information
2. Amend the budget by $250,000 for Asian Chronic Care disease prevention and management. Currently there is over $700,000 in funding for the African American Chronic Care program in the City HHS Department. The Concept Menu proposes $1.5 million for Latino Chronic Care. The purpose of the Asian Chronic Care disease program is similar to the Latino Chronic Care program. That is, Chronic Disease Programs will address the highest burden chronic diseases such as diabetes, cancer, heart disease and stroke as well as chronic disease risk factors including tobacco use and exposure to secondhand smoke, poor nutrition, physical inactivity, and lack of access to chronic disease prevention, risk reduction, and management opportunities. Interventions should be comprehensive, evidence-based, population-level strategies that promote long-term policy, system and environmental changes in settings such as worksites, schools, healthcare settings and the community, including place-based initiatives to best reach the Latino and Asian populations. These initiatives will help make the healthy choice the easy choice where people live, learn, work and play.
