Help gather insights to increase recycling

Post by Brandi Clark Burton »

Austin Resource Recovery, in partnership with the Innovation Office, has launched a new community engagement initiative about recycling. Council offices can support this initiative by encouraging citizens to join the conversation and contribute their insights. Please consider sharing info about this initiative in your community meetings, newsletters, social media, website, etc.

Background
A recent independent study found that more recyclables are going to the landfill than are being placed in residents’ blue carts. In fact, 44 percent of what is found in Austin’s residential trash stream could be recycled.
To turn this around, the City wants to learn more about the barriers between residents and their blue recycling carts. For that reason, Austin Resource Recovery is asking for “insights” from the community. Unlike “ideas” which are suggestions for solving a problem, “insights” reveal the root of the problem and this more detailed information will help ARR understand the obstacles which will allow for more and better opportunities for recycling.
Details
From July 27 through Aug. 24, Austinites can share their insights about recycling through an online survey, text messages and community meetings.
Residents are encouraged to visit insights.austintexas.gov or text 512-580-7778 to answer this question, “How might we put fewer recyclables in the trash?”
